The outer wings of these Flicker birds (woodpecker family) are mostly neutral in color.  But the lining of their wings and tail are quite a contrast with their vibrant orange/red color!  They are beautiful to see in flight!  (I also think we need some larger bird feeders!)

  1. Love the shot you have of the one with open wings. You can get some idea of the detail of the wings in that photo. We see these birds a lot. Their colours are incredibly strong at this time of year – probably wanting to get some attention. Well, it is spring!!!!!

  3. Wonderful how you met this “contrast” photo challenge. Not only are the under and over wing colors quite in contrast, but the actions of the two birds in the first “snap” are quite in contrast in that captured brief moment!

  4. always beautiful photos….. I love to see your work. The Flickers are gorgeous…and what a perfect interpretation of Contrast. bravo!
PS…I love the capture in the first photo with the second Flicker flying away! Wow..nice!

  5. Wow..I have never had a flicker come to a seed or suet feeder. That is remarkable. Given that they are insect eaters, I can see how they could like the suet, but the seeds..amazing…You showed off the detail of the feathers so well. Great addition to Nature Notes..Thank you…Michelle

  8. Great photos! Woodpeckers are so colourful! We have a couple who visit our garden every now and then. Haven’t got any photos of them yet…

  9. Breathtaking photos! I, too, am afflicted with the “shutterbug” fascination. Sigh….I have a camera practically glued to my side. ‘Tis a heavy weight to bear but the artistry brings joy.
Your haiku’s bring a smile. Exceptional use of our colorful, rich English.
    Keep it up!
